In 2005 everyone at this little orphanage was hungry. .
In December 2005, friends from Australia and from Canada began to raise funds to help provide this large "family" with the means to support itself.

2009 .. a trust fund for students and a new shower block for the children
In 2009 we began a trust fund for the 8 children who won places at senior schools and for 3 blind children who were given the opportunity of attending the Akropong School for the Blind. This fund is managed from Sydney, and school fees, books and the necessary expenses for these students are paid each term with the help of George Alu who is an ex-teacher at the Volta Home school. In addition the fund is paying for the correspondence teaching degree for Isaac.
2010 .. our trust fund continues to pay for senior education and special education
Our efforts also focused on encouraging more volunteers to visit and to help with the daily running of the orphanage and the school. We have had the help of some wonderful helpers who have stayed for many months. They have made a huge impact on the lives and welfare of these children.

Still urgently needed ...
There is still much to be done. The ongoing cost of medications; toothbrushes;; soap and basic items of clothing etc is beyond the very limited income of the Home. These things are often simply not available to the children.
There are no secure clean areas to store books or belongings . The school has very few desks and almost no teaching aids and there is rarely enough money to pay the very patient young teachers their $12 per week salary.
Most of the children and their teachers suffer the terrible fevers of malaria two or three times each year and there is rarely money for medication. Many children need special medical attention.
Scholarships are urgently needed to allow the more academic children to finish the last three years of secondary school.
However the most urgent need for all these children is the help of volunteers to encourage and patiently educate the Volta Home adults so that they will themselves understand the need for a higher standard of care.
